For Better or For Kids by Patrick and Ruth Schwenk

Here is an overview of Patrick and Ruth Schwenk's new book, For Better or For Kids: "The transition from “married” to “married with children” can be tough. Before they know it, a once youthful and energetic married couple finds themselves in a minivan loaded with noisy kids and littered with Cheerios, crusty Sippy cups, banana peels, and missing library books. As much as you love your children and work hard to nurture and train them for the future, the challenges that come with parenthood can make the “for better or for worse” promise a hard one to honor.
"For Better or For Kids will enable couples to:
  • Build a God-centered marriage instead of a Child-centered or Me-centered marriage
  • Avoid the dangers of spouse-neglect and self-neglect
  • Effectively communicate in the chaos
  • Explore ways to parent together as one team
  • Find balance in the busyness."

This book is about how to keep that little spark going in your marriage, once you children have entered your married life. They tend to take over and that is not a good recipe for a strong marriage. You should always place God first, followed by your spouse and then children and then come family, friends, neighbors and the word. When that formula gets out of balance, when others come before your spouse, even and especially your own little ones, it makes for hardship and struggles within your relationship with your spouse.

This book reminds you that you and your spouse have vowed to one an other to work with each other, at all times, to be teammates and lovers. No matter how tired and worn and busy life makes you, your spouse is your priority, even over your children.

I have read and really enjoyed Hoodwinked, which was co-authored by Ruth Schwenk and Karen Ehman, which is about motherhood and myths mothers believe. As soon as I saw that Ruth had written an other book, but this time with her husband, about balancing kids and marriage, I knew right away that I wanted to read it and that it wouldn't disappoint! I really do hope that this book can reach out and help all those couples who are out of balance and that have lost that spark that every marriage needs! Your children are important but the best way to show them and teach them how to be is to love their other parent!
